Like the movie industry, the car industry loves car chases and sequels. We’ve seen both so often that they’re getting a bit worn, but once in a while, a company breathes new life into a classic. That’s what we’ve got with the Ford Mustang Bullitt, which debuted recently at the Detroit Auto Show and will be making its way to Ford dealerships in the months ahead.
The Ford Mustang is unquestionably an American icon. The Ford F-150 may be the best-selling vehicle here in the States, but the Ford Mustang is the original pony car, and it’s carved out a unique place in history. It was still a comparatively young model when it became not just an automotive icon, but a cinematic one as well.
The car was featured in the movie “Bullitt,” and played as central a role as its driver and the movie’s main character. That’s saying something, since the titular detective was played by none other than Steve McQueen. It featured one of the most famous car chases ever, and cemented the car’s place in the popular imagination. It also led to sequels (the car, not the movie) in 2001 and 2008.
Now we’re being treated to another sequel, fifty years after McQueen and his Highlander Green Ford Mustang made their mark. It’s powered by a 457-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine outfitted with an intake manifold, open air induction system, and other components inherited from the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350.
Other special features include
- Shadow Black or Dark Highland Green color scheme
- 19-inch Torq Thrust-style wheels
- Red Brembo brake calipers

- Numbered special-edition plaque on dashboard
- 1000-watt B&O PLAY audio system
